Letter to RMBC Regarding Road Closures in Brampton EN LE Morthen and Thurcroft

Please see below the letter which I have sent to Rotherham Council, regarding ongoing road closures in the area, affecting drivers and public transport.

“I am writing following a significant number of representations from constituents regarding the ongoing and planned road closures affecting Thurcroft and Brampton en le Morthen.

Residents have raised serious concerns about the scale, timing, and management of these works, particularly where multiple closures are taking place simultaneously. I have received reports describing traffic conditions as dangerous, especially during peak school hours. The village contains three schools and two nurseries, and I am advised that on at least one occasion school transport was unable to reach children due to congestion, leaving pupils stranded.

Constituents are questioning whether an adequate risk assessment has been carried out to account for the cumulative impact of these closures on traffic volume, pedestrian safety, and access for emergency services. There are also repeated reports of contractors and subcontractors driving through residential streets at excessive speeds in flatbed vehicles transporting equipment, causing alarm to residents, including elderly people and families with young children.

The consistent issues being highlighted are poor coordination of works, unsafe traffic conditions, inadequate or confusing signage, and a lack of timely and effective communication with residents. Many constituents have already lodged complaints with the Council due to the disruption and the perceived absence of proper planning.

Given the seriousness of these concerns, I would be grateful if the Council could urgently clarify:

• The purpose of the works currently being undertaken and the organisations responsible

• The full timetable for all affected roads, including confirmed start and end dates

• What risk assessments have been completed in relation to traffic management, school transport, pedestrian safety, and emergency access

• How contractor behaviour and compliance with safety standards and speed limits are being monitored and enforced

• What immediate steps are being taken to improve safety and communication with residents

The situation as described to me requires urgent attention. I would welcome a prompt response outlining what action is being taken to address these concerns and prevent further risk to residents.”

I will update you once a response has been received and I hope for a resolution to these issues soon.
