Unfortunately, Reform UK activists attempted to hijack a coffee morning I’d organised for ex-mineworkers to discuss technicalities relating to their pension scheme.
Posts on social media encouraged people to attend (despite it being an invite-only private event), and provoke disruption. Reform UK supporters then went on to make threats to me and my staff, including comments such as: ‘build the gallows, hang them high’.
I was advised to either cancel the meeting or arrange for a police presence. I did not want to let down the many people who wanted to attend this meeting. But it’s such a shame police time was wasted as a result.
Robust political debate is important, and I welcome it.
But this behaviour is unacceptable. I’ve met Nigel in Parliament. This is about his leadership now. He must condemn this behaviour and call on the local Reform UK Party in Rotherham to apologise and assure me – and other local politicians – that they will not repeat this behaviour.
