Thank you to everyone who came to the public meeting I organised with South Yorkshire Police in Todwick, in relation to speeding and the A57.
The police are fully aware of concerns regarding speeding in the area and have made it a priority. They emphasised the importance of continued reporting from residents for them to make the case internally, with the council and with the Highways Agency for the need for further speed calming measures. Regular reporting helps build a clearer picture of ongoing issues and enables the authorities to take appropriate action.
We also discussed the possibility of additional road signage to help address speeding concerns and I have reached out to the two local councillors to discuss this further.
A57 CAR MEET
Further to the meeting held with South Yorkshire Police in Todwick at the end of last month, I wanted to provide another update in response to the irresponsible and reckless car meet held between Junction 31 of the M1 and Red Lion Roundabout on Saturday night.
I have been contacted by many concerned residents and have passed all information I have been sent onto the police, including photos and videos that I have received via email and Facebook messenger. Today, I wrote to Rotherham South NPT inspector Darren Birley and have been informed of the police’s robust actions in response to Saturday, which is summarised below.
• Operational Support Unit officers were deployed and dealt with the activity. The road was closed at each end of the A57 and allowed Officers to deal with some of those in attendance immediately and gather evidence for later prosecution, of others
• Several vehicles were seized on the evening and several drivers reported on summons for driving without due care
• Dozens of vehicles were identified and documented. Owners/drivers will be written to and dealt with accordingly
• Drivers’ insurance companies will be made aware of their customers involvement
I am pleased to see the police taking this matter very seriously and I will keep residents informed of any further information.
